My name is Tracy Kerth, and I am the HC Math Specialist/Data Coordinator. I am excited to be celebrating my second year at this amazing school. I want to share 2 new exciting things we are implementing this year- Guided Math Differentiated Groups and Reflex Math.
Guided Math is a structure so that teachers can differentiate their math instruction. Guided Math allows the HC teacher to meet with small, flexible groups for 30 minutes each day to teach standards and skills each child is ready to learn. Each group is working on different skills! This format helps meet the diverse needs of the students. Guided Math is in addition to the 60 minutes of whole group instruction! It’s a win-win for everyone!
Based on our data, we saw a need for implementing a program that assisted our students with their procedural fluency. Reflex Math is an online, game-based program that helps students build fast and effortless recall of math facts. Research has shown that quick recall of math facts is critical for future success in mathematics. The expectation is that each 1st-6th grade student works on the program a minimum of 3 times each week until they “reach their green light.” Many of our students are going on more than 3 times because they like it so much! We’ve only used this program for about 3 weeks, but here are some astonishing pieces of data to support that Reflex Math is WORKING!
*Over 300,000 total facts have been solved so far this year
*As a school, our HC students have had over 1,103 “Green Light” Days!
*As a school, our HC students have learned 8,175 new math facts!
